Neurotica by wolfmorphine Neurotica by wolfmorphine
This piece is inspired by a bit of folklore told to me this past spring. It is apparantly sometimes said that if birds build nests with your hair, you will go crazy. This bit of information really stuck with me at the time because I was supposed to be giving my boyfriend a haircut shortly and I was suggesting we do it out on the balcony so that the birds could build nests with the cuttings. After hearing the superstition though, I figured better safe than sorry and cut his hair in the kitchen instead.

As with many interesting ideas or bits of folklore, I really wanted to try my hand at capturing this one in a piece of my art and this is what I came up with. I decided to have the birds build a nest in Neurotica's hair instead of merely with it, as I felt it would be more interesting visually. I also decided to wind some of the twigs around her arm to make it seem more like this whole process was becoming a part of her and taking her over... body as well... not just mind. Finally, I picked sparrows for the birds. Sparrows are said to exist in the place between here and the Beyond, and are sometimes thought to be guides for souls crossing barriers, so they seemed an appropriate choice. Also, ever since seeing The Birds, sparrows kind of give me the creeps anyway. Stock used to create this piece comes from ~Odessa11stock for Neurotica and additional stock is from sxc.

Details for this piece can be viewed here for those interested.

Wonderfully mesmerizing and you've managed to capture Poe's AND Tim Burton's notion of the perfect woman.

Thank you! She's also kind of my version. :) Tim Burton and I think a lot alike, sometimes.

Me too. I'm currently obsessed with Sweeney Todd, but I love all of his work... especially The Nightmare Before Christmas, Beetlejuice, and Edward Scissorhands.

Yes, I don't think that Burton has done a single bad movie. I was originally skeptical of Sweeney Todd because it was a musical, but all of the actors pulled it off quite well.

Very beautiful, the dark heavy colours compliment the lighter tones well and work nicely toward the mood of the piece. Good job!

This reminds me of a scenerio of going to one of those very expensive fashion shows were you see the clothing is very prestine but the headware just comes out all bizzare to add that la-de-da personality to the way the show is run. I don't know why I rambled that one out just this deviation makes me identify with that ..somehow! I admire the detail and craftmanship in this one most definitely.

:lmao: Scared you a little, huh? What is the matter, don't you want your boyfriend to be a bit neurotic? Com'n where is the fun in that? I have been with a few, very few, truly off-tilt women. Sometimes fun, sometimes though...

Ha ha ha.... actually Seth and I actually both suffer from a couple of actual mental disorders (under control, of course). I figured neither one of us needs any more "crazy". We already have the perfect amount for a pair of artists between the two of us, and well... you just don't mess with perfection. ;)

The colors - the idea - the eyes - everything! WOW. This is really wonderful. I cut my husband's hair outside every chance I get and have been doing so for 25 years....but he was crazy to begin with so.... (ha). This is really lovely....and I so enjoy your work.

Awesome picture, and I like the idea behind. Never
heard that thing with the birds nests. And the
sparrows look kind of evil, poor girl!

Yeah, it's so easy to do cute birds, doing them creepy is harder (if it's not about raven, crows or vultures of course)

Thank you! And I hear you on the birds. I love birds, but something about them is so mysterious and bizarre, and that can be creepy at times. It's always like they know something the rest of us don't.

 Hello!
Oo, macabre & horror this time. :) Good choice for this.
It's a very nice idea with "Bird Superstition" but I don't believe on this by the way. :giggle:
I like what have you did with stock. I saw a little check in details. Is it a texture?
Definitely great job!

Yeah... I don't really believe in superstitions either, but that part of me that is ever a child always figures "better safe than sorry" I suppose. ;) Keeps life interesting, in this odd way.

Probably what you're seeing in the details is the texture I add to most of my finished pieces. Usually you guys can't see up close enough to notice it (unless you bought a print or something) but I almost always add either canvas or sandstone texture to my full-size works as a finishing touch. I love how it makes it look like a "real" painting.

Amazing. I really like the painting, the colors and mood it sets. The description that goes with it as usual is fascinating. You've done a great job at capturing in the art what you mention in the description.
